About the event

Separation does not happen overnight.

Navigating the emotional and practical aspects of separation can easily take a couple of years.

Parents transitioning from their relationship as a couple to a co-parenting relationship have an opportunity to address the problematic areas in their relationship and manage them in new ways. For example:

  • Maintain clear boundaries if they were consistently violated in the past
  • Develop pathways of communication if there has been a lack of communication
  • Create a co-parenting relationship that takes into account everyone’s needs if the needs of one person dominated the relationship in the past

As well as helping to develop a successful co-parenting relationship, these new skills can help parents improve their relationships with their family, friends, their new partner and teach their children valuable relationship skills.

It is a process, and it takes time to figure these things out. Identifying the specific needs of each child and parent is an essential step in this process. When everyone’s needs are taken into account, it provides a foundation for creating a co-parenting relationship that is more likely to be successful long term.

In this workshop we will:

  • Explain a simple framework that can help clarify children’s and parents’ needs
  • Go over a case study that will give you an opportunity to practice identifying the needs of each family member
  • Leave plenty of time for your questions
